The beauty of being raised on a Saskatchewan ranch has propelled Leanne to do art since before she can remember. Her work is inspired by nature. Subject matter portrayal is influenced by Colour, Texture and Movement to engage diverse perceptions and to elicit viewers’ emotions. Leanne believes this is accomplished not by what you see but how you see. Memory and perception play a big role in this endeavour. Therefore Leanne considers herself to be an Impressionistic artist.
Holding a BA in Psychology, Fine Art and Criminology from U of A – Augustana, Leanne also studied Visual Communications and Fine Art in Medicine Hat College, Fashion Design at Blanche Macdonald Institute in Vancouver. She is currently obtaining her after-degree BEd. in Secondary Education at the U of A, hoping to teach junior high art and psychology. While attending universities, Leanne designed interiors of homes and businesses from Saskatoon to Vancouver among many volunteer projects. Before going back to school, Leanne was a special needs Educational Assistant in Camrose, AB where she was inspired by the children and her coworkers.
Under Professors Keith Harder and Julian Forrest’s instruction at U of A South Campus – Augustana, Leanne’s painting took a new direction. She expanded on techniques which improved her ability to communicate what she wanted to portray to her audience. Intense three-week art courses pushed her to widen her breadth of understanding concerning not just old masters such as Rembrandt, Monet, Van Gogh and Canada’s Group of Seven but to explore Contemporary work as well. What artists are doing in such high volume today, is impressive. Having instant access to them on the Internet has changed the face of the art world. This is a very different art world since Leanne started her studies in 1988. In 1989, her Typography class consisted of tediously hand-painting letters for mock-up magazine articles and in 1988 she designed a record album by hand, all before the use of computers. L. Spendelow Art looks forward to the future evolution of art not only in her work but especially when teaching it to students!
Married to a crazy and busy but handsome man with 2 gorgeous daughters, aged 18 and 21, and 3 dogs while currently renovating their home, proves that Leanne is always up for a challenge.
Today, L. Spendelow Art can be seen at community events, and businesses, on her L. Spendelow Art page on Facebook or by contacting the Camrose Art Society.
