Elin Laaksonen

Multi-passionate artist exploring what art looks like when you’re falling madly in love with yourself.

My name is Elin but I also go by Sparkles. I’m a Swedish Tornedalian who moved here to Alberta in December 2015.

My first love was drawing, but I paint with watercolour, acrylics and oil too. In the early 2000, I got my B. A in Journalism and got into photography but I also started drawing digitally on my computer with a tablet. I worked with website design doing logos and branding for companies, graphic design like E-book, pamflet and infographic designs etc. and social media marketing.

In 2010 I moved back to northern Sweden and connected with my Tornedalian roots through traditional handicrafts like shoemaking, knifemaking and tin embroidery.

I’m currently drawing myself as a comic to become the Main Character of my own life, but also working on a children’s book, helping Camrose Art Society with graphic design & social media posts, and doing custom portraits and logos, branding and graphics for clients.

My digital style is on the cartoonish, cute side of things while my pencil & water colours are more realistic. I have been doing a lot of self-portraits lately exploring all emotions. I take photos both with my phone and Canon 550d.
